On 23 April 2000 Trevor Donnelly and his partner Jennifer Doyle were involved in a row with three women in the Abrakebabra in the Crumlin Shopping Centre.[3] The women followed them from the takeaway, hitting them as a security guard intervened.[3] Byne arrived in his car and began beating Donnelly with a baseball bat, hitting him even as he lay on the ground.[3] When Jennifer pleaded with him to stop, Liam said "Tell him if he wakes up it’s bullets."[3]

About fifty people witnessed the assault, but only Doyle and Donnelly were willing to testify.[3] Most were too afraid of Byrne and his gang to testify.[3]

Sentence activated
When he was brought before the court his suspended sentence was activated and he was jailed for the first time on 23 May 2000.[3]

Witness intimidation
Byrne tried to intimidate Doyle on several occasions.[3] First he offered €50,000 to her to not testify, with a threat to kill her if she testified.[3] She refused to take the bribe.[3]

Further threats forced her to leave her home after it was shot at.[3] There was a plot to murder her - an INLA gunman was asked to kill her to prevent her testimony.[3]

She lived in B&Bs and hotel accommodation under an alias and was virtually penniless.[3] She was not included in a witness protection programme.[4]

After she testified she was badly injured in an assault in the corridors of the Four Courts.[3][4]

Her testimony was a major factor in Byrne's conviction and two years were added to the four year sentence which after remission amounted to four and a half years.[3] The sentences were initially to run concurrently but the Court of Appeals decided they should run consecutively.[4]

but the thing is, i know the other uk promoters were backed at least in 90s by firms that killed people here and all over and ill assume the same with other countries all over the world , its wrong but ireland highlighting it aint going to make it a blind bit of difference,it will just kill its own boxing, i agree i dont like drugs hards ones they ruin areas families,communities and the people involed aint all baddens its just you get caught up in it through school familiy friends , iam inner city london my family limerick city both torn apart by drugs , but lets not kid our selfs it was poverty that left a void there that no one cared about untill these so called people now have power in a sport that no one cared about till conlan lee fury frampton burnett untill money was there

Boxing has always been controlled by gangsters unfortunately, it is a game ripe for exploitation, just like the drugs trade, it doesn't mean that the Kinahans get a free pass because the other guys aren't angels

Indeed there are socioeconomic issues such as poverty that need to be addressed overall, but these guys have been linked to 30 murders in the last five years, there have been paramilitaries in the Irish troubles who didn't murder that many people, if getting rid of the Kinahans kills Irish boxing then that says more about Irish boxing doesn't it?

Let's hope Kinahan gets what Rick Parker got

totaly get what ur saying but it aint that simple though , will the irish goverment pump money in to boxing doubt it,also before the paramilitaries there was something like a murder rate of 10 people in ireland but that taboo was broken with the paramilitaries, we have all ways had reblion in ireland were children of a fighting race , days of Charles Haughey i mean decent men but lined there own pockets , i hate the way gafs in ireland are full of murders i had aunts not wanting to go out after 2pm disgraceful, buts lets not forget the Tenement housing terrible living standards where were goverment then , iam not biggin any one up here , i just hate that it takes certain types of people to gain power before the goverment care , it tells me they dont care about the working people of ireland
