No statement or source has said anything about weight. This is a concern to me, as perhaps Kovalev has accepted a catchweight but has been instructed to say nothing about it.

Very pleased to hear that.
I wonder if Nutmeg is using this fight to engage in a high profile matchup without having to endure the rigours of making weight.
Kovalev is a very skilled boxer with the ability to punish. He’s not as impressive physically now but he’s a more organised boxer than he has been in a couple of years.
Maybe Nutmeg has made the right choice. Kovalev will be slower and less active than Golovkin. Perhaps it will take the younger and more active fighter to give Nutmeg an absolute run for his money. The main defect of Nutmeg is getting winded and taking frustrating breaks after throwing ambitious attacks. This could mayb and him in trouble if he tires badly versus Kovalev who can throw cruel punches when he sits down on them.
Or perhaps Kovalev’s jab will not only be a nuisance like Golovkin’s, but also a weapon. He certainly took many Golovkin jabs in their fine rematch, did Nutmeg. I certainly think we will need to see a very assertive Kovalev, not only boxing but taking the body of Nutmeg, the faster fighter.

It seems, the minority favors Kovalev. But I pick Kovalev to stop Canelo. Kovalev will dominate from the distance. Canelo will logically try to go for Kovalev's body, Kovalev will be prepared for that, he'll keep the distance and he'll occasionally catch Canelo during his attempts to engage inside. Canelo has a great chin, so he won't be knocked out cold, but he can be hurt, he will be exausted and batter to a stoppage in the later rounds.

Is this fight at 175 lbs without any re-hydration limit?
Can Kovalev choose the gloves he wants?
Fight is scheduled for Vegas. Canelo will be the home fighter and will get the Mayweather/Ward treatment from the judges. Strike one against Kovalev.
We already know the referee will allow Canelo to foul and hold and hit low. Strike two against Kovalev.
There will be no drug testing of any real purpose or consequence. Strike three against Kovalev.
The ring will be as small as they can make it (to accommodate more fans lol). Strike four against Kovalev.
Now you see why Kovalev is already a 4-1 underdog.

True. No idea about the rehydration limit. Would be surprised if there wasn’t one.

..considering the amount of money involved, I don't think Kovalev/his team will be too demanding and choosey...thinking probably along the lines of "ok they'll screw us anyway but we'll be nicely reimbursed.."

It's such a weird one. Canelo always has the deck stacked in his favour every time that I just can't see him losing a fight. But jumping up another weight division to fight a fighter that is
actually good?
Kovalev has really paid his dues. He was a really exciting fighter who fought on an even level with Andre Ward and both his losses there are iffy and stink of favouritism. I hope he beats Canelo up, but like I've said before there must be something that a lot of people behind the scenes in boxing know if people like the risk adverse Yarde, a bullshit hype job instagram boxer, are confidently striding over to Russia to take him on.
It's a great fight for boxing though. Really fun. I hope Kovalev f*cks him up.

Yes, I agree. It's a fight for the money anyway.

Gingerhead looked like a perfectly conditioned LHW when I saw him running in San Diego a few weeks back.

He’ll be a stumpy looking light heavyweight, Nutmeg. Think he’ll need to do a lot of moving in, stealing openings, raiding then moving out. This could be quite fatiguing and could be a factor especially if his punches aren’t breaking down Kovalev.
Interesting fight.

Yes, Canelo won't have the same speed he had at 160 with the added weight. We also know he can't have a lhw's power.

Think Canelo will come unstuck here, he won't be able to stand in front of kovalev and with the energy required to execute the strategy required to win he's going to tire.
Kovalev KO 8-10.

Plus he'll be under jab bombing, so I guess, you're right about the outcome.

Kovalev doesn't like being hit to the body.
To be fair, no-one probably does, but some can take it better than others.
I think Clenelo will focus his attack primarily on Kovalev's body and Sergey will wilt with his corner having to pull him out.

..forget body punching, I suggest Canelo try Ward signature punch..that sure as hell works in Las Vegas...

Kov was handpicked because they saw against Ward he doesnt like being ripped to the body. Kov will have really good success early before all the body work by Canelo starts to wear him down. Everything theyre doing with Canelo is calculated. Theyre not having him fight Callum Smith at 168. They're not gonna have him fight Bivol or Gvodzyk after this. They are selecting guys at the higher weights who they stylistically see something they can exploit.
Still, this is a great fight. Canelo will appear to lose 5 of the first 6 rds, but the judges will make sure he wins at least 2 of the 6 before he starts to take control late and wins a decision or gets a stoppage around 10 or 11.

Kovalev is getting toward the end of the line. I'm not one to yell conspiracy but the guy is making over 12M for this fight. The most he's ever made is 2M vs Ward. This is 6x more $ than hes ever made and 12x more than he usually makes. I wont be shocked at all if he's being brought in to lose but at the same time not "look bad" in doing so.

Kovalev hasnt faced anyone with the supreme class to really exploit his body besides Ward. Ward and Canelo, these guys are master tacticians. Maybe Hopkins 10 years prior could've done it. Canelo's team is moving pieces on the chess board here. Canelo has opened a -400 favorite. When you have 2 of the judges in your pocket every fight you can take calculated risks like this.

Yeah, Canelo will be judge-aided again. Of course, Kovalev knows it. That's why Kovalev will gradually become sharper and that's why I pick Kovalev to stop Canelo in the later rounds.

Plus the quick turn around from the tough fight with Yarde for the 36 year old is the biggest determinant and advantage for Canelo right now...but f**k it Kov can win and he will get paid for sure..retirement money. I wonder what drug testing policy is in place for this fight..
