Billy Kilgore Missing Fight

Post by DavidEpstein »

I believe I've discovered a missing fight for Billy Kilgore, the fighter who defeated Jake LaMotta. On Sept. 16, 1943, Kilgore fighting as a featherweight lost to Tommy Florence. Here is the link:

How about the other 1943 bout?

I just noticed that it was an amateur bout. I can only assume the other bout might have been an amateur match, but I really don't know. I'll try to find something on it.

That's impossible to tell without a Tampa paper. It was a professional card (hence the entry) but they might have had a couple of amateurs as their opening prelim.

If the Sept '43 fight is a amateur fight then June '43 must be too?

It's not as clearcut at that. In pre-war Florida, it was not uncommon for prelim fighters to travel back and forth between pros and amateurs, depending on the locality they fought.

So, if he fought pro in June, would the Sept fight still be considered an amateur fight?

Yes, amateur is amatuer, pro is pro.
