John Conteh was brilliant, partying and injuries spoilt his career though, his 15 round decision win over the dangerous Yaqui Lopez with one good hand is one of my favourite old fights.

I always thought Hamed under achieved badly, he could have been an all time great
Re: who were the most naturaly gifted british fighters ......
i agree if naz had stayed with ingle and stopped trying to blast everyone out he could of been a great ,he started as a boxer then became this terrifying puncher but he forgot that it was his defence that allowed him to be in postion to land the big punches .Coco wrote:I always thought Hamed under achieved badly, he could have been an all time great

????? He didn't have a bad chin. I presume u mean getting ko'd by 1 of he hardest punchers of all time.semtexreilly wrote:if only he had a chin, what a boxer herol graham wasforcefraser wrote:Bomber Graham was a naturally gifted fighter.

His chin did alright against McCallum, to push him to a split decision and in his career he only got stopped 3 times, 2 towards the end of his career and the Ko you remember was Julian Jackson, who knocked out nearly all his opponents, chilling power,if I remember rightly Graham was dominating him at the time and on verge of stopping him, when caught with a haymaker.stevieb_8006 wrote:????? There was nothing wrong with Herol's chin. Hagler might have got up from that Jackson shot, but I struggle to think of another fighter who would. Herol's problem was threefold, he was heavily avoided because he made everyone look bad, he was on the wrong end of several iffy decisions in his biggest fights, and most of all, he chose to slug against McCallum. I think he won that fight anyway, but if he stayed away, it's a comfortable win,

Danny Costello? I think that was his name
Re: who were the most naturaly gifted british fighters ......
He choose to slug with his hands down as well, showed how tough he was, did not McCallam stop Watson later on as well, not to mention Don Curry,Julian Jackson and the Terrible one, yes Herol Grahams chin was sound.SamWise72 wrote:There was nothing wrong with Herol's chin. Going by the original question, someone who had the talent but not the dedication, them Herol Graham is not in that group, he trained all the time and was dedicated as they come at championship level.
Re: who were the most naturaly gifted british fighters ......
Joe calzaghe is the most gifted british fighter imo. He had just about everything.
Re: who were the most naturaly gifted british fighters ......
Colin McMillan was very good and had terrific coordination and just about everything really, Paul Hodkinson struck me as a very natural fighter and Nigel Benn seemed to be born for knocking people out as did Darren Dyer - they weren't fantastic movers but what they did they did very well from the day they started boxing till they packed in.

I've trained with, sparred and fought with loads and out of everyone the two that stand out are Tony Doherty and Mathew Ellis.

It's strange that the most talented didn't really attain what they could have.Jeff Thomas wrote:I've trained with, sparred and fought with loads and out of everyone the two that stand out are Tony Doherty and Mathew Ellis.

The best I have seen on tv is Conteh, the George Best if boxing, the best live was Calzaghe. And I have seen some fighters... Joe was exceptional.
Re: who were the most naturaly gifted british fighters ......
It will be always argued how good he was because he never faced the best in his prime, I think he had it all.rio wrote:Joe calzaghe is the most gifted british fighter imo. He had just about everything.
Re: who were the most naturaly gifted british fighters ......
Including the ability to make adjustments as the fight went on, he didn't need to be told which punches to throw or even be given much of a gameplan, you can't teach that.Coco wrote:It will be always argued how good he was because he never faced the best in his prime, I think he had it all.rio wrote:Joe calzaghe is the most gifted british fighter imo.
