Hardest training British fighters ever.
Hardest training British fighters ever.
Who do you think in their primes were the hardest and most dedicated trainers in British Boxing.
Here are some suggestions
Frank Bruno- Was always in fantastic physical shape and by all accounts was an extremely dedicated trainer throughout his long career.
Nigel Benn- Always in top shape I also read that as a novice pro when he was being trained by (Brian Lynch?) he often overtrained and once passed out on a long run, when checks were run on him by a doctor his body fat level was dangerously low.
Barry McGugian - Always in great shape and I've heard a terrificly hard trainer.
Any one agree? Any other ideas, suggestions, stories etc?

you can imagine the kind of training Kosta did in Siberia as part of the Soviet national team in the late 80's...jamesmcdonnell wrote:I've actually read an account of Nigel Benn's workout, It was pretty hardcore...
However, compared to Kostya Tszyu, it's nothing, Tszyu by far has the most punishing workout in the book.
The guy has been training like a pro since his early teens i should imagine.....

He does two workouts every day. 1st workout if solely for strength and conditioning, and lasts about 2 1/2 hours. Then later he does another 3 hours in the gym doing standard boxing training, he then finishes off with a 10 minute gymnastics routine, including headstands and tumbling around the ring. quite amazing really. That's not even including his roadwork!
I have seen Erik Teymour train and he includes a lot of headstands and bridges to strengthen the neck and torso... also uses the tennis ball for dribbling to improve hand speed and coordination.jamesmcdonnell wrote:He does two workouts every day. 1st workout if solely for strength and conditioning, and lasts about 2 1/2 hours. Will be on the world stage soon.
IMO he would murder someone like Carl Froch and would give Jeff Lacy heaps of trouble.

Sadly, there are no plans to distribute it over here. However, if you go to Amazon.com. it is on sale there, however it is on pre-order and the American title is slightly different.Coconut wrote:James, that workout book you reviewed on Max, is it going to be on sale over here?
Look for 'Workouts with boxing's greatest champions' it is by Gary Todd. Not sure what the release date in the states is yet.

I've often wondered when many fighters go into 'training camp' are they training for a specific fight or just training to make the weight.jamesmcdonnell wrote:Bernard is basically always in fighting shape, so when a fight comes along, he doesn't have to waste time losing weight, nor does he have to enter the ring dehydrated. Sensible chap, sadly a rarity in todays boxing.
guys like johnny Nelson, sam soliman, Scott dixon, Elvis Michailenko, Erik Teymour, Takaloo, peter oboh never go much over there fight weight....KOJOE90 wrote:I've often wondered when many fighters go into 'training camp' are they training for a specific fight or just training to make the weight.jamesmcdonnell wrote:Bernard is basically always in fighting shape, so when a fight comes along, he doesn't have to waste time losing weight, nor does he have to enter the ring dehydrated. Garry Delaney, Bruce scott, ricky hatton, Joe Calazghe, all blow up between fights.....
The guys in the top list never really stop training just drop to 4 runs a week rather than twice a day 6 days a week when they arent fighting.

Sorry, what I meant to say, was that most fighters campaign way below their natural weight, came out all wrong though.
Everyone tries to gain the weight advantage by boiling down and killing themselves to make weight, a consequence no doubt of the 24 hour weigh in.
In addition a lot of them, because most boxers aren't that active any more, have plenty of time to get fat as fornicate in between fights.
