Chagaev Champion Again

Post by SteveO »

According to the latest WBA rankings, Ruslan Chagaev has become the WBA 'Regular' champion.
It seems his loss to Lucas Browne has been overturned. I don't remember reading anything about that - very strange.
I mean, I know about Browne being stripped of the belt and banned for 6 months, but I didn't know Chagaev had been awarded the title!

The result still stands in the BoxRec ratings. I still hope to see Browne on TV again. It was a great fight and a great comeback.

As soon as Chagaev attempts to unify, the WBA are going to strip him and make Valuev champion again.

Can't see Oquendo going to Chechnya, this fight may have to be on neutral turf after past events

Only if the commission overturns it.
The sanctioning body can do anything they want with its belt regardless of official results. They can keep boxers from fighting for their belts and ratings but only the commissions can issue a suspension that actually keeps boxers out of the ring.
If the commission has not declared the fight a NC then it is still an official win for Browne regardless of the WBA ruling.

Are there any doubts that the Chechen/Russian commission will overturn it?

He wasn't a WBA champion for many years until the robbery against Chudinov.

Hard to understand how that can be the case. Perhaps Boxrec are just waiting for the right authority to notify them of a change?

I don't believe Lucas doped. I don't know 100%, but Russia is dodgy as hell and he seems genuine.

I do feel for Browne, I think he was railroaded.

Why do they need an "Interim" Champion (Ortiz) when we've already got a Regular Champion (Chagaev) and a Unified Champion (Fury) :brick:

Only thing that makes sense it to have Ortiz vs. Chagaev as soon as possible.

It does help his case that he tested negative 6 days before the fight. It doesn't make sense that he would suddenly take a bunch of steroids only a few days from the fight. The cost/benefit analysis just isn't there.
