Louis-Baer (a question)
Louis-Baer (a question)
I was just watching the Louis-Baer fight; Louis nails Baer with a nasty right hand and Baer takes a knee and is counted out. What I couldn't tell was whether Louis was able to follow-up the right hand with a short left or not. It looks like he might have but the viewing angle is bad. Does anyone know if there was a second punch or did Baer go down just from the right hand?

Re: Louis-Baer (a question)
I always thought it was just the right hand, delayed reaction from Baer

Baer went down from three lefts. He had been taking a lot of punishment.
Re: Louis-Baer (a question)
Interesting, watch this version of the fight and reduce the speed to .75 and you will see the right hand (possibly followed by a short left.) The video you posted is cut up for some reason. The punch lands at about 15:57 in this video, but it too switches camera angles just after the right hand lands which makes the left hand hard to see; making it difficult to discern which punch actually drops Baer.
Personally I think it is the left that puts him down, but the right hand sets it up. Be sure to reduce the speed, the fight looks much better.
Going to have to search out a third version.

Re: Louis-Baer (a question)
In the second version the film has been spliced out for whatever reason just after 15:55. The first version, the one I posted, shows the knockout more accurately.
Re: Louis-Baer (a question)
I see what you are saying, I felt (in my clip) you could almost see the final left that dropped him; what is odd is that in your clip the viscous right hand Baer ate is missing. Both clips seem to have been doctored. But again, it was the three left hands that finished him. Thanks!

Looked like a Big right hand following by a grazing left hook to the temple then a delayed re-action and then Baer slowly sinks to the canvas.

Re: Louis-Baer (a question)
Joe Louis describes this fight in one of his autobiographies.
He wrote that when the bell rang to begin the fourth round Baer got off of his stool wobbly and backpedded as Louis thru left jabs and right crosses.
Then Louis finally " caught" up to Baer and delivered a hard left that staggered Baer followed by a Big right
hand that had all of Louis's weight behind it and Baer dropped like a "sack of potatoes".
How did the ring-side radio annoucer decribe it in the radio broadcast ?

That is correct there is a radio broadcast of the fight; need to listen to that again!Caractacus wrote: ↑12 Mar 2019, 17:37 Joe Louis describes this fight in one of his autobiographies.

Post the link if you find it. I liked those blow by blow radio boxing broadcasts so much better than I do the new multi announcer tv thing with the talking heads chatting it up on and on.

You have to download the recording but don't get spooked when you try, you will see a PayPal request, but it is only a request for a donation you don't have to pay.
Be sure not to skip the opening announcements they are wonderful. They speak in so much hyperbole that it will have you doubled over with laughter. One example: they call Louis the 'wild jungle man' and Baer the 'jester' and much much, more.
The guy starts talking about the war in Europe, which I can't understand because the damn fight took place in 1935, so I think they may be referring to the Spanish Civil War (I guess).
There is also this plead for the audience not to be racist; it seems they were scare there might be a riot if the Black man wins, so they hold off the fight and lecture the audience on respecting the golden rule of "may the best man win."
Enjoy!

Love it! Thank you! I didn't have to download anything, just hit the play button. He mentioned "peril" of war in Europe. Don't know what he was referring to. The Spanish civil war hadn't started yet. Also he wouldn't have used the word "racist" since the commies just invented the word in 1933 and hadn't had a chance to infiltrate it into the language yet. I gotta check out that 1936 Buick!
Re: Louis-Baer (a question)
I didn't mean to say he used the word racist I just meant they were scared of some sort of racial reaction to Louis winning. Did you hear how he said he made the same speech for the Louis-Carnera fight? -- You are correct the Spanish Civil War started in '36. -- I wonder what he was referring to? Maybe just the rise of the Nazis or maybe Mussolini in Ethiopia? I think that started in '35.Ilya Muromets wrote: ↑13 Mar 2019, 22:23APerno wrote: ↑13 Mar 2019, 14:22https://www.oldtimeradiodownloads.com/s ... 1935-09-24Ilya Muromets wrote: ↑13 Mar 2019, 10:52APerno wrote: ↑12 Mar 2019, 20:36That is correct there is a radio broadcast of the fight; need to listen to that again!Caractacus wrote: ↑12 Mar 2019, 17:37 Joe Louis describes this fight in one of his autobiographies.

Funny how they apologized for having commercials. -- It was great listening to how excited he got calling the fight.
They just don't build them like that anymore.

Wow they sure don't! What a beauty! I want it!
Even the one apologetic commercial is refreshing. None of the mind games agenda bs you get now, just straight to the salient point: "This car is good, buy it!"
