Mcguigan v Bernard taylor
Just rewatched it and Taylor was well ahead in that fight. Seemed like one bad round and he turned it in.
Re: Mcguigan v Bernard taylor
That was a very tough first defence for McGuigan to negotiate. No soft pasty for the Clones Cyclone.
For my money Taylor possessed Sugar Ray Leonard movement and sublime skills.
Don't under estimate the heat and power Barry used to bring to the party. McGuigan would be all over his opponents like a rash and just never stopped coming

Taylor was extremely good.
Juan LaPorte was an animal too remember.

Me & the family (all the men around the goggle box) breathed a collective sigh of relief when the last bell rang.
The decision was a formality, but bugger me LaPorte was a hard bastard

Re: Mcguigan v Bernard taylor
Eubank Sr got to speak with LaPorte through his manager Torres translating Spanish back to him, after Juan’s MSG fight with Chavez in Dec ‘86. Eubank’s then-sparring partner Molina was fighting in the prelims and got him a ticket. Eubank was in awe of LaPorte and Chavez and they inspired him that night to try all out with boxing over settling for a 9-5 office job. He thought LaPorte Won!
Re: Mcguigan v Bernard taylor
LaPorte was a tough customer in his prime. He went close with Pedroza too, KO'd Rocky Lockridge. Only times I saw him really get whipped when he was at his best was against two legends, Sanchez and Wilfredo Gomez. He went downhill after Chavez but still not an easy out and had a phenomenal chin
Re: Mcguigan v Bernard taylor
LaPorte took a fledgling Kosta Tszyu the distance 12 YEARS after he'd challenged Salvador Sanchez for a world title.
Re: Mcguigan v Bernard taylor
I always liked prime McGuigan he must have been a nightmare to fight. What an engine and relentless pressure.
Re: Mcguigan v Bernard taylor
MGuigan freely admits that Laporte hit him harder than anyone else in his career. (Next hardest is a fellow from Papua-New Guinea whom a 17-year-old McGuigan narrowly outscored in the bantamweight final of the 1978 Commonwealth Games.) Laporte also had a magnificent beard and was never floored in his long career. As for Bernard Taylor, he was McGuigan's mandatory and boxed brilliantly for much of the fight but when McGuigan's pressure really began to tell, he bailed out all rather tamely at the end of the seventh round. McGuigan was scathing of the American's decision to retire, denying him a more emphatic victory.

He was a bull of a man. As you say never touched the canvas, and fair play to McGuigan taking that shot late on.bennie wrote: ↑21 May 2021, 04:13 MGuigan freely admits that Laporte hit him harder than anyone else in his career. Taylor's am record was off the chart. Barry broke him on the night. Harsh to have a sly dig at an hall of famer, but if
only he'd have listened to Mr Eastwood..

Taylor looked big at the weight, well built too. He was probably more comfortable at super feather.

He speaks it perfectly now. Heard an interview a few years ago. He was fresh from Puerto Rico back then dropped in New York City.Noxy wrote: ↑21 May 2021, 05:02Did LaPorte not speak English.coghaugen11 wrote: ↑20 May 2021, 19:18 Eubank Sr got to speak with LaPorte through his manager Torres translating Spanish back to him, after Juan’s MSG fight with Chavez in Dec ‘86. Only you could manage to turn a McGuigan v Bernard Taylor thread into something about Eubankcoghaugen11 wrote: ↑20 May 2021, 19:18 Eubank Sr got to speak with LaPorte through his manager Torres translating Spanish back to him, after Juan’s MSG fight with Chavez in Dec ‘86. Re: Mcguigan v Bernard taylor
Yep, he was much older than McGuigan and beautifully built at bantamweight. He blasted his way to the final and was robbed of the verdict against McGuigan but showed wonderful sportsmanship.Noxy wrote: ↑21 May 2021, 05:01Tumat Sogolik, I think.bennie wrote: ↑21 May 2021, 04:13 MGuigan freely admits that Laporte hit him harder than anyone else in his career. Taylor boxed his head off that night - that was a boxing lesson but I read at the time McGuigan broke his rib(s)?
Well... he boxed McGuigan's head off for 6 to 7 rounds - in my opinion one of the great uncrowned champions... got KO'd by Hector Lopez a short time later...

Hector Lopez reached an Olympic boxing final at just 17 and could have been special but he roamed the Los Angeles barrios as a gang member and took drugs. He still rocked Kostya Tszyu to his boots in a 10-rounder in 1994.

And Zoo was at his best back then. He boxed a guy that Chavez fought and did better Chavez had, around that time.

The US commentators mentioned McGuigan recently beating Taylor during Eubank’s pro debut, and that Eubank’s brother was the only guy to beat McGuiganDeserter wrote: ↑21 May 2021, 05:23Only you could manage to turn a McGuigan v Bernard Taylor thread into something about Eubankcoghaugen11 wrote: ↑20 May 2021, 19:18 Eubank Sr got to speak with LaPorte through his manager Torres translating Spanish back to him, after Juan’s MSG fight with Chavez in Dec ‘86. Takes me back. Remember I was a kid and on the day bazza fought taylor me and my sis went for a day out in blackpool with my mum and grandad on the train from sheffield. I recall taking my pocket radio and earphones and being on the way back on a train between blackpool and manchester, getting the commentary on the radio, signal going every now and again. My days thats a long time ago.
