It was most likely 6 oz gloves because 8 oz gloves did not necessarily become the norm until the 1960s or so. For a long time everybody under middleweight wore 6oz gloves and everybody above wore 8 oz gloves. However after the death of Dooku Kim and the horribly one-sided Larry Holmes vs Tex Cobb bout, glove sizes were increased to where heavyweights wore 10 oz gloves and everyone under middleweight wore 8oz.

N.B.A. states went to 8 ouncers in 1951 but there were some exceptions. See Robinson-Fullmer 2 in 1957.

Actually the N.B.A. states went to 8 ouncers in 1948-I double checked. I read a lot of old newspapers online.

What's really interesting is how the rules have changed regarding hand wrapping. Years ago-30's and 40's-some states were only allowing 18 inches of tape per hand and not nearly as much bandage as today, though I forget the exact amounts allowed years back.
