"Former bantamweight champion Alfonso Zamora of Mexico City, his face battered and his nose bloody, swatted down Alberto 'Superfly' Sandoval in the 8th round of their scheduled 10 rounder Thursday night to determine a 118-pound title challenger. Zamora, 119 1/4, started fast and staggered Sandoval, 118 3/4, from Pomona, Calif., in both the 2nd and 3rd rounds as Sandoval tried to trade punches in the Olympic Auditorium clash. The speedier Sandoval then began fighting at long range, peppering Zamora with jabs. Sandoval appeared to be catching up until the Mexican landed a left hook and followed up with a two-fisted barrage in the 8th. Zamora had been continually looking for an opening. While doing his looking, he absorbed punches that brought bruises under both eyes and over the left one. Still, neither fighter went down until the end came at 2:55 of the 8th. Referee John Thomas didn't even bother to count when Sandoval went down." -Associated Press
