Soldier Kearns claimed he was born Dec. 24, 1886 in Brooklyn. [1] and this account was supported in a column by famed sportswriter/cartoonist Robert Edgren in the NY Evening World December 21, 1912.

Kearns was a blacksmith when he joined the US Cavalry going to the Philippines. There he fought three times against fellow soldiers and won all three by knockout.
