The non-profit International Boxing Research Organization (IBRO) was created May 1982 by a handful of boxing historians in America. The "international" part of its name initially referred to the nature of boxing as an international sport. But, soon after its founding, boxing historians from throughout the world joined as members and the word took on additional meaning.

The IBRO was organized for the express purposes of: compiling complete and accurate boxing records; disseminating boxing research information; and cooperating in safeguarding the individual research efforts of its members by application of rules of scholarly research.

Today, although the number fluctuates, it currently has about 150 members, most of whom are BoxRec.com Editors.

Members exchange their boxing research findings, primarily through email and a quarterly Journal, and respond to the many requests for assistance and/or information from outsiders,.

Membership is open to anyone having an interest in boxing history. As of 2025, a digital membership is $45.00US per year.
