Bout Summary

Nelson was all smiles at announcement despite a heavily pro-Cowdell English crowd. The two traded early in the opening round with Nelson being the faster and more defensively sound. As Cowdell threw a left hook and dropped his right hand, Nelson countered with a sweeping left uppercut that put the Englishman out immediately and sent him crashing to the mat and flat on his back. He remained there as the referee reached the count of ten. Cowdell was unconscious in the ring for several minutes following the bout before eventually being roused to his feet.

Quotes

"I came in to knock him out in the first round. I made my mind up because the people here didn't treat us good. They were making all kinds of words to get the title from us, but I want to prove to them I'm the best in the world and I want (Barry) McGuigan. I will knock him out anywhere I fight him. I'm ready to fight McGuigan anytime, any day, anywhere... McGuigan is good but the way McGuigan fights there is no way he can beat me. There is no way McGuigan can go four rounds with me... I took the title from a young man and any old man that wants to challenge me then hey I'm here." - Azumah Nelson in the televised post-fight interview.
