European lightweight champion
Borge Krogh of Denmark
had a 10 round non- title fight with Nigerian- born Roy Ate,
also billed as Tony Raye. In November 1966, one month after
winning the title from Maurice Tavant, Krogh had
stopped Ate on TKO in the 8th in another non-title bout.
Ray had come to Europe in 1966, started at the top (so to speak) by being stopped by ex- European lightweight champion Franco Brondi and coming champion Pedro Carrasco. In his 9 fights so far, Ate had 8 losses.
He was no match for Krogh who took it easy with him in the first 4 rounds. In the 5th Krogh hit the Nigerian on the chin. His gumshield flew out, something which prompted Ate's corner to throw in the towel.
Roy Ate contiuned to fight until 1972, based in Spain. He lost a total of 36 fights, winning only 3 with 1 draw.
