George (Babe) Edwards began his boxing career in Southern California in 1943 as a Light Heavyweight. It was noted by the Los Angeles Times that the baby-faced Edwards bore a physical resemblance to former welterweight and middleweight champion Mickey Walker. Edwards fought mostly four and six rounders in Southern California and the Bay Area, before surfacing in Spokane in September 1948. After fighting in Spokane through the spring of 1949, Edwards disappeared, only to resurface in Oregon under the name Babe (Hardrock) Gordon.

According to reports in the Portland Oregonian, Gordon would develop a reputation for fighting in Roseburg, Oregon, which would lead to him being given a bout against Oregon's top Heavyweight, Joe Kahut. On June 17, 1949, Gordon (a.k.a. Edwards) scored a surprising upset over Kahut, winning a split decision, shocking due to the fact that nobody had heard of Babe (Hardrock) Gordon. Shortly thereafter though it was reported that Gordon was in fact Babe Edwards who had appeared in Spokane the previous fall.
