- The IBF ranked Hopkins #1 and Mercado #2.
- The fight took place before a crowd of 15,000.
- Hopkins was down in the fifth round. The two were exchanging punches in close when Mercado hurt Hopkins with a right uppercut. Another uppercut sent Hopkins backwards and onto the seat of his pants.
- Hopkins was down again in the seventh round. Hopkins backed Mercado into a corner and got nailed with a right uppercut. A followup combination sent Hopkins tumbling into the ropes and down to the canvas.
- Mercado was the first boxer to knock Hopkins down in a professional bout.
- Hopkins came on strong in the later rounds.
- Showtime commentator Bobby Czyz scored the fight 114-112 for Hopkins.
