- San Francisco Call bout summary: [3]
A one-two punch to the heart and kidney caused Johnny Crowe to drop. He soon died of what the coroner's jury termed "over-exertion." Doctors who performed the autopsy found that Crowe had a double ("hourglass") stomach and a slightly enlarged heart, and would have eventually become an invalid anyway. He also had a blood clot in the brain, which prevented him from having normal respiration.
Billy Snailham was arrested and charged with manslaughter, although Crowe's parents pleaded that he not be prosecuted.
Crowe's death spelled the end of boxing in the greater Everett area for a long time to come. (According to the Sept. 30, 1906 San Francisco Call, Everett was the only place in Washington state where boxing was permitted. [4])
The Everett Athletic Club at Sixth and Pacific Streets was immediately dismantled and the place closed down.
One source reports that the referee was Mark Shaughnessy (Frank Connelly). "Shaugnessy was subsequently a manager or second during at least three fatal matches -- Dutch Neal vs. Harry Peppers, Harry Tenny vs. Frank Neil, and Alex Gdovin vs. Chiefy Johnson."
