Cambria A.C.
The Cambria Athletic Club was located at Kensington Avenue and Somerset Street, in Philadelphia's Kensington neighborhood. It was used as a boxing venue between 1917 and 1963, and had a seating capacity of 2,000. Because of the often bloody fights it put it on, it earned the nickname the "Bucket of Blood."
Prior to the arrival of television, and the erosion of the regular club system in the United States, the Cambria put on boxing shows weekly on Friday nights. It was still used during the 1950s as a club show venue along with the Adelphia A.C..
There was also a venue called Cambria Stadium, that put on outdoor boxing shows during the summer months in Philadelphia, in the North Philadelphia neighborhood.
Johnny Burns was the promoter at this venue from its beginnings, until his death in February 1940. The promotions of the club were taken over after that by Joe Wenke, who had been working with Burns. Wenke continued promoting at the club until 1955. Al Copeland was the promoter at the venue in the fall of 1955.
