WBA World Middleweight Title
"Carlos Monzon of Argentina toyed with challenger Gratien Tonna for four rounds, then knocked out the Frenchman with a short right hand to the side of the head in the 5th round of their world middleweight title fight Saturday night. Tonna fell to his knees and stayed with his head bent toward the canvas while Puerto Rican referee Waldemar Schmidt counted to 10. The Frenchman made no effort to get up. Tonna landed only one good punch against the Argentine. A left hand in the 1st round, but from then on Tonna could do nothing against Monzon's superior skills. It was during the 4th that Schmidt gave his 5th warning to Tonna for holding and rabbit-punching. In the 5th, Tonna was warned again for the same infraction. The referee had just broken the men from a clinch when Monzon drove home his knockout right." -Associated Press
Post-fight comments
- "I was robbed. It was a scandal. He hit me on the back of the head." -Gratien Tonna
- "The punch landed on the back end of Tonna's jaw. It was the best punch of the fight. Tonna could have gotten up, though. Tonna, as far as I could see, was not hurt. God knows why he stayed down." -Referee Waldemar Schmidt
