Distinguishing vacant titles from defenses
In case the entry in the "Defenses" column reads "Inaugural" or "Interim" it is unclear if the title at stake was vacant before the inaugural or interim bout or how many times it had been defended if it had not been vacant. Therefore additions are necessary which could result in entries like "Inaugural/Vacant" or "Interim/2.". Of course, especially "Interim" could also be attributed to a fight in the form of a footnote (like "Super Champion" (for WBA super champions), abbreviated "SC", which should rather abbreviate "Super Championship" on title fights lists.)--Emaster 21:44, 14 May 2008 (UTC)
Order of fights held on the same date
When a sanctioning body recognizes more than one title holder in a weight division, fights with different versions of the title at stake may be held on the same day. For instance, on September 15, 2008, the interim and the full version of the WBA super flyweight title were contested. The fight with the full version at stake was begun and finished earlier than the bout for the interim title so that the former precedes the latter on the list:
| Date | ||||||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 76 | 2008 Sep 15 | Nobuo Nashiro (2) | SD 12 | Kohei Kono | Vacant RC | Yokohama, Kanagawa, JPN |
| 77 | 2008 Sep 15 | Jorge Arce | RTD 9 | Rafael Concepcion | Interim | Mexico City, Distrito Federal, MEX |
On November 1, 2008 separate fights for the full and interim titles respectively were held again. I think one of them started earlier, while the other one ended earlier. What's to be their order on the list?
Reign numbers
A title holder's repeated reign is indicated by a corresponding number behind the titlist's name on the title fights lists (e.g. Rafael Orono's second reign as WBC super flyweight titlist):
| Date | ||||||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1980 Feb 2 | Rafael Orono | SD 15 | Seung Hoon Lee | Inaugural | Caracas, VEN |
| 2 | 1980 Apr 14 | Rafael Orono | UD 15 | Ramon Balbino Soria | 1 | Caracas, VEN |
| 3 | 1980 Jul 28 | Rafael Orono | PTS 15 | Willie Jensen | 2 | Caracas, VEN |
| 4 | 1980 Sep 15 | Rafael Orono | TKO 3 | Jovito Rengifo | 3 | Barquisimeto, VEN |
| 5 | 1981 Jan 24 | Chul Ho Kim | KO 9 | Rafael Orono | - | San Cristobal, VEN |
| 6 | 1981 Apr 22 | Chul Ho Kim | UD 15 | Jiro Watanabe | 1 | Seoul, KOR |
| 7 | 1981 Jul 29 | Chul Ho Kim | TKO 13 | Willie Jensen | 2 | Pusan, KOR |
| 8 | 1981 Nov 18 | Chul Ho Kim | TKO 9 | Jackal Maruyama | 3 | Pusan, KOR |
| 9 | 1982 Feb 10 | Chul Ho Kim | KO 8 | Koki Ishii | 4 | Taegu, KOR |
| 10 | 1982 Jul 4 | Chul Ho Kim | PTS 15 | Raul Valdez | 5 | Taejon, KOR |
| 11 | 1982 Nov 28 | Rafael Orono (2) | TKO 6 | Chul Ho Kim | - | Seoul, KOR |
| 12 | 1983 Jan 31 | Rafael Orono (2) | KO 4 | Pedro Romero | 1 | Caracas, VEN |
| 13 | 1983 May 9 | Rafael Orono (2) | UD 15 | Raul Valdez | 2 | Caracas, VEN |
| 14 | 1983 Oct 29 | Rafael Orono (2) | TKO 5 | Orlando Maldonado | 3 | Caracas, VEN |
| 15 | 1983 Nov 27 | Payao Poontarat | SD 12 | Rafael Orono | - | Pattaya, THA |
Why doesn't the number of reign show up behind Orono's name in fight number 15, which bookended his second reign?
Also, if a fighter has possessed a title more than once, even the fights of his first reign could be marked by adding a "(1)" behind the fighter's name. Thus, first reigns would be distinguished from first-and-only reigns.
The proposals would alter the list as follows:
| Date | ||||||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1980 Feb 2 | Rafael Orono (1) | SD 15 | Seung Hoon Lee | Inaugural | Caracas, VEN |
| 2 | 1980 Apr 14 | Rafael Orono (1) | UD 15 | Ramon Balbino Soria | 1 | Caracas, VEN |
| 3 | 1980 Jul 28 | Rafael Orono (1) | PTS 15 | Willie Jensen | 2 | Caracas, VEN |
| 4 | 1980 Sep 15 | Rafael Orono (1) | TKO 3 | Jovito Rengifo | 3 | Barquisimeto, VEN |
| 5 | 1981 Jan 24 | Chul Ho Kim | KO 9 | Rafael Orono (1) | - | San Cristobal, VEN |
| 6 | 1981 Apr 22 | Chul Ho Kim | UD 15 | Jiro Watanabe | 1 | Seoul, KOR |
| 7 | 1981 Jul 29 | Chul Ho Kim | TKO 13 | Willie Jensen | 2 | Pusan, KOR |
| 8 | 1981 Nov 18 | Chul Ho Kim | TKO 9 | Jackal Maruyama | 3 | Pusan, KOR |
| 9 | 1982 Feb 10 | Chul Ho Kim | KO 8 | Koki Ishii | 4 | Taegu, KOR |
| 10 | 1982 Jul 4 | Chul Ho Kim | PTS 15 | Raul Valdez | 5 | Taejon, KOR |
| 11 | 1982 Nov 28 | Rafael Orono (2) | TKO 6 | Chul Ho Kim | - | Seoul, KOR |
| 12 | 1983 Jan 31 | Rafael Orono (2) | KO 4 | Pedro Romero | 1 | Caracas, VEN |
| 13 | 1983 May 9 | Rafael Orono (2) | UD 15 | Raul Valdez | 2 | Caracas, VEN |
| 14 | 1983 Oct 29 | Rafael Orono (2) | TKO 5 | Orlando Maldonado | 3 | Caracas, VEN |
| 15 | 1983 Nov 27 | Payao Poontarat | SD 12 | Rafael Orono (2) | - | Pattaya, THA |
After reading the first line it is clear that Orono must have had more than one reign and after reading the fifth line there's no doubt that Chul Ho Kim has only held the title once (yet).
World title fights lists
The "World Weight Class Title Fights" lists have not been created yet. Also, there are no lists to select in BoxRec's title search which refer to the World Weight Class Title or the Weight Class World Title. (Both forms can be found in the database.)
Evidently, determining which bouts to consider title fights is difficult: According to BoxRec, there were personal claims to the championship, black and white champions, contests billed or advertised as world title fights which might not have been genuine ones, and "regional" world champions (only recognized by at least one state or country). Moreover, there were the NBA and NYSAC world champions, whose title fights are represented in their own lists.
Combined title fights lists
There are separate title fights lists for each title (World, NYSAC, NBA, WBA, WBC, IBF, and WBO). Why not also combining them so that something like the following comes into being:
| Date | Titles | Defenses | Defenses | |||||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ? | 1999 Mar 13 | WBA WBC IBF |
Lennox Lewis | 5 (WBC) | PTS 12 | Evander Holyfield | 4 (WBA) 2 (IBF) |
