In an interview published by Peruvian weekly Aire Libre (08-20-1924), Pitts stated that he made his professional debut with a KO win over Jack Allan in 4 rounds in 1915. Pitts also claims to have participated in 141 professional contests up until August of 1924.
It was reported that Pitts had been born in an Australian cave, and of Gypsy parents. He had served during the Great War (WWI) with American troops.[1]
According to the U.S. Passports Applications (1795-1925) database on the Ancestry.com website, one Charles Pitts, a "Pugilist," was born on February 12, 1923 in Kompany, Australia. On February 14, 1923, Pitts was issued an emergency passport through the American Consulate in Colon, Panama. Wirt Ross stated on Pitts's application that he had known him for eight years.
