Chris Byrd 194 lbs beat Matthias Sandow 198 lbs by TKO at 1:30 in round 4 of 8
- Date: 2009-03-21
- Location: Hanns-Martin-Schleyer Halle, Stuttgart, Baden-Württemberg, Germany
- Aired On: ESPN Classic
- The fight was on the undercard of Vitali Klitschko vs. Juan Carlos Gomez.
- Brian Doogan of ESPN.com reported: "Chris Byrd looks stronger as a cruiserweight than he did last time out as a light heavy, that's for sure. Against an opponent with Mathias Sandow's record, however, it is hard to say what he can achieve at the weight. Byrd bossed the first three rounds which featured mostly jabs and the odd left cross by both southpaws before Sandow unloaded in Byrd's corner in the fourth. The crowd responded with a spontaneous outburst of applause, even though Byrd managed to slip and block the majority of punches in Sandow's sustained assault. Sandow quickly paid the price. Byrd marched him over to his own corner and punished the German with hooks and uppercuts before the referee intervened at 1:30 of Round 4."
- After the fight, Byrd said, "Tomasz Adamek is the man at cruiserweight, and I want to fight him as soon as we can get it on."
- This was Byrd's last fight. He chose not to pursue the cruiserweight path, deciding instead to retire with a victory. [1]
