Martin's six-round unanimous decision win against Deirdre Gogarty on March 16, 1996, earned her recognition by the WBC as its nominal Female World Lightweight Champion. (the sanctioning body did not offer women's title belts for open competition at that time).

In November 2010, Jim Martin stabbed Christy repeatedly and shot her in the back after she told him that she was leaving him for a woman with whom she was having a relationship. She escaped when Jim, thinking she was dead, got in the shower to wash the blood off. She flagged down a motorist and begged him to take her to the hospital. In April 2012, Jim was convicted of attempted second-degree murder with a firearm, attempted manslaughter and aggravated battery. He was sentenced to 25 years in prison.
