Daniel Waldo Merritt, also known as "Big Dan" was born October 31, 1917 in Washington, PA. to William Merritt and Nancy Long. Merritt died from a stroke caused by pugilist disease on January 24, 1980 in Cleveland Ohio. He is best known for winning in 1938 both the National A.A.U. and the Chicago Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions in the heavyweight divisions. He also is known for his 1944 exhibition bout with Joe Louis.
