In the eight-round semi-final, Chili Bean Prado, 128, Detroit, fell out of the ring in the third round of his bout with Davey Moore, 128, Springfield,Ohio. Prado could not continue claiming he hurt his back. To every-one's surprise the referee called the but a "no-contest" and based his decision on loose ropes. The Ring Magazine February 1954 - Nat Fleischer, editor for the Ring Record Book, regarding an unjust no-contest decision in a bout involving Davey Moore and Chili Bean Prado in Grand Rapids, Michigan, recently. Prado was knocked onto the ring apron injuring his back and was unable to continue in the third round. The referee saw fit to call the but a no-contest due to loose ropes. This writer claimed the bout belongs to Moore on a knockout. The Michigan Athletic Board of Control upheld the referee's decision, but added that the records would be adjusted not to affect either fighter. IBRO Journal #81.
