Notes
Timeline
- On June 9, Adam Booth told The Times that the Klitschkos and Harrison were the front-runners to fight Haye in October/November.[1] That same day, Harrison confirmed that negotiations with Haye and both Klitschkos were underway: "I'm told by my promoters that both David Haye and the Klitschko brothers have expressed an interest in facing me when I return after rehab. If it's either Klitschko brother, the task will be hard, but that's how I want it. I respect both brothers as they are effective at what they do but both can be beaten. As I said before, David Haye is a false prophet – one punch on that chin and it will shatter like glass"[2]
- On June 15, Daily Mail reported that Harrison had accepted an offer to fight Haye on November 13 for £1 million and that Harrison's promoter, Matchroom Boxing, was now waiting for Haye's side to finalize the deal.[3]
- On June 23, ESPN reported that "it becomes increasingly likely that the pair will meet on November 13", with the fight expected to gross £5 million.[4]
- On August 8, when asked about the Harrison fight, Haye responded: "That's not been arranged yet. No date, no venue, no opponent has been arranged yet. I should know in about two, three weeks... Adam Booth is involved in the negotiations, so in a couple of weeks, Adam will have a name, a number and a venue next to it."[5]
- On August 21, Barry Hearn told Sky Sports News that negotiations were moving forward: "We are in talks, I understand the talks are going reasonably well. In the heavyweight division, there is nothing else out there as far as British fight fans are concerned, Harrison-Haye is enormous." [6]
- Two days later, Harrison said that the fight had been agreed to on principle and that it would take place at MEN Arena in Manchester on November 13. However, the contract was not yet signed, much to his frustration: "I'm about as bored as every other fight fan about hearing why you won't accept fights. What are we in this game for?" He urged Haye to "man up and get this fight signed": "So bring on the Battle of Britain and I will be the Hayebreaker come 13 November." [7] Haye responded on Twitter: "Shut the Fcuk [sic] up Fraudley. If somehow we ever do fight, that career-high pay day you crave won't cover your medical bills! Pipe down."[8]
- Officially announced on September 7.[9][10]
Ranking Movements
- Harrison omitted from the WBA rankings published on June 23, became No. 13 contender when the rankings were updated on August 4.
The Fight
- The two first rounds started very slowly with no real punches from any of the boxers. In the third round Haye stepped up and knocked down Harrison. Harrison got up but received too many punches without fighting back and the referee stopped the bout.
- Harrison only landed two jabs the entire fight, and did not throw a single power punch.
- The bout drew 304,000 pay-per-view buys in the United Kingdom.
- In Germany, the fight averaged 4.17 million viewers.
