Notes
Timeline
- Originally Wilder was expected to make his next defense against the winner of the bout between WBC No. 1 and No. 2, Alexander Povetkin and Bermane Stiverne in an official title eliminator; however on December 20 WBC withdrew its sanction of the bout after Povetkin again failed a drug test, this time for Ostarine.[1]
- It was reported on December 20-21 that Wilder was close to finalizing a deal to face Andrzej Wawrzyk on February 28 at Legacy Arena in Birmingham, Alabama.[2][3][4] Wawrzyk had previously said in an interview on November 17 that his next fight would be "early next year" most likely in the United States.[5]
- Responding to the rumors, Wawrzyk confirmed that he was "100% committed" to fighting Wilder, though the deal hadn't been signed yet. According to Wawrzyk, negotiations had been ongoing for two weeks by that point.[6]
- Bout officially announced by the Premier Boxing Champions on December 28.[7]
- On January 24 it was announced that the fight had been called off after Wawrzyk had failed a drug test.[8]
- Washington announced as Wawrzyk's replacement on January 30.[9]
- Contracts signed on February 23, merely two days before the fight's scheduled date.[10][11]
Ranking Movements
- Wawrzyk 16th in the WBC rankings released October 6-20.
- In the next rankings released at some point between November 9-16, Wawrzyk was listed 13th, making him eligible for a title shot; Washington was rated seventh.
- On November 10, Wawrzyk also entered WBO rankings at No. 15.
- On December 9-23, WBC moved Wawrzyk to No. 12, while Washington dropped from 7th to 10th.
- On December 10, WBO moved Wawrzyk to No. 14.
- As a result of the failed drug test, both WBC and WBO removed Wawrzyk from their Top 40 and Top 15, respectively. Meanwhile, Washington was promoted to No. 8 in the WBC rankings released early February.
The Fight
- 12,346 people were in attendance.
