Notes
Timeline
- On February 26, promoter of the WBC mandatory challenger Alexander Povetkin Andrey Ryabinskiy won the purse bid to promote the title bout between his fighter and Wilder with an offer of $7.15 million. As the champion is bound to receive 70% per WBC rules, Wilder was guaranteed $5 million.[1]
- On March 10, Ryabinsky revealed that he wanted to stage the fight in Moscow, Russia on May 21: "I had a few options: to make a ton of money, or to create a comfortable environment for Alexander. The choice was easy, I picked the second option."[2][3]
- On March 19, Wilder's manager Jay Deas expressed his willingness to travel to Russia for the fight: "We're looking forward to it. We've heard really great things about what Russia has to offer. It's a very, very unique type of trip and we expect a great trip."[4]
- On April 16, Ryabinsky announced that Wilder had signed the deal. The fight would take place at the Megasport Arena in Moscow on May 21.[5]
- On May 13, the Voluntary Anti-Doping Agency (VADA) announced that Povekin had failed a drug test done on April 27; he'd tested positive for meldonium. Povetkin's B sample also came back positive. Meldonium was added to a list of banned substances in September 2015 and the ban went into effect on January 1, 2016. Povetkin claimed to have last consumed it in September, however that did not line up with test results which were negative on April 7, 8 and 11 and then positive on April 27.[6]
- On May 15, the Wilder-Povetkin bout was called off.[7][8]
- On May 25, WBC granted Wilder a voluntary defense.[9][10]
- On May 27, BoxingScene reported that Arreola had become the front-runner for the shot at Wilder. The fight was expected to take place mid-to-late July.[11]
- Arreola announced as Povetkin's replacement on June 13.[12][13]
Ranking Movements
- On February 8, Arreola was suspened for 90 days after he had tested positive marijuana in the lead up to the fight against Travis Kauffman. The suspension was retroactively applied from the day of the fight, December 12, 2015, and thus formally ended on March 12, 2016.[14]
- Arreola was removed from the WBC rankings following the suspension. WBC had previously listed him at No. 9 based on results up to December 31, 2015. Other sanctioning bodies hadn't had him ranked within Top 15, nor had he been listed Top 10 by Ring Magazine.
- The WBC did not apply its suspension retroactively; as a result, Arreola was not reinstated until July 9-19, when he was again listed ninth.
The Fight
- Arreola was down on one knee in round four, but he beat the count. Arreola's face and nose were bloody by round eight, affecting his vision, rendering him unable to continue on. Arreola does not answer the bell for round nine, ending the WBC world title contest in Wilder's favor.
- Wilder stated after the bout his right hand was broken, and he tore a muscle. He did not use his right hand much after knocking Arreola down.
