  • On June 23, Wilder's trainer and manager Jay Deas told reporter Michael Woods that September 26 was favored as the date of the next defense, most likely against a fighter ranked Top 15 by the WBC.[2]
  • On July 16, Wilder himself expressed his intentions to make his next defense on September 26, hoping to have one more fight before facing his mandatory Alexander Povetkin.[3][4]
  • On July 31, Wilder confirmed that he would return to the ring on September 26, and that the fight would be televised by NBC.[5]
  • On August 7, Wilder's trainer and manager Jay Deas told the press that Wilder's title defense would either be in his native Alabama or Los Angeles. He didn't reveal the opponent, though insisted it had to be someone rated within Top 15 by the WBC. "Once you start in the top 15, some guys are obligated (to other fights), some guys want too much money, some guys are hurt and some guys just fought," Deas said. "Right off the bat, you can whittle it down to five guys and you start to see what the best fight and best possibility would be."[6]
