Timeline

  • There were rumors that Wilder would have his next fight after Duhaupas against Bryant Jennings in January, though Jennings’ promoter Gary Shaw publicly shut them down on October 8.[1]
  • On November 4, WBC gave Wilder permission to schedule another voluntary defense in January, de-facto postponing the fight against mandatory challenger Alexander Povetkin until at least April.[2]
  • On November 6, it became public that Wilder’s next defense was scheduled for January 16 and would be televised by Showtime.[3]
  • On November 11, manager of the IBF's No. 1 heavyweight contender Vyacheslav Glazkov Egis Klimas revealaed that they were in talks to schedule a fight between his fighter and Wilder on January 16, though nothing had been signed yet.[4]
  • On December 3, Glazkov ended negotiations with Wilder, opting instead to face Charles Martin for the IBF title. According to Glazkov's promoter Kathy Duva, they had agreed with Wilder's promoter Lou DiBella on almost all points, except a stipulation that would guarantee DiBella a percentage from Glazkov's future fights in case he defeated Wilder. "At this point, we have endured two months of foot dragging and deal changing from the other side", Duva said.[5]
  • During a press-conference on December 5, Wilder publicly voiced his frustration at lack of opponent for the upcoming date, while Duva dismissed rumors that Wilder would face Szpilka: "This is a Showtime fight... there is no opponent and no discussion took place about that."[6]
  • Wilder-Szpilka formally announced on December 8, 2015.[7]

Ranking Movements

  • Szpilka steadily ranked seventh by the IBF and WBC and 13th by the WBO for months.
  • In the WBO rankings as of November 14, Szpilka improved to 12th place.
  • In the November rankings released by the WBC between November 14 and December 5, Szpilka traded places with eighth Carlos Takam.
  • On December 3, IBF moved Szpilka one spot to No. 6. With 2nd place vacant, Szpilka was effectively a Top 5 heavyweight contender by the IBF.
  • On January 9-19, WBC moved Szpilka up two spots, making him No. 6.

  • There were 12,668 people in attendance.
