Donald Curry, the WBA world Welterweight champion and future International Boxing Hall of Fame member, beat credible challenger Roger Stafford, dropping him three times in the first and only round in a bout held at Marsala, Italia (Italy).
Stafford had been pegged as a challenger for Sugar Ray Leonard's world championship the year before; that fight got cancelled because of health issues with Leonard's retina but being on the news garnered Stafford major media attention. He had also beaten Hall of Fame member, former world champion and tremendously hard hitting Jose Pipino Cuevas in 1981.
