Former WBO and WBU Cruiserweight champion Enzo Maccarinelli of Wales lost the European Cruiserweight title in his first defense to unbeaten Alexander Frenkel, a Ukrainian fighting out of Wurzberg, Germany. Perhaps a bit slow and a bit wild, Maccarinelli appeared to be slightly ahead in a war of trading power shots in an extremely close bout after six rounds. A counter left hook by Frenkel which Maccarinelli never saw dropped him in the seventh. Maccarinelli did beat the count, but got knocked out cold three punches later by a brutal left hook. All seven bouts in promoter Frank Warren's Magnificent 7 fight card in Birmingham ended by kayo. Frenkel at 23-0, 18 kayos. Maccarinelli loaded up on every punch and gave a good accounting of himself, but the left hook which took him out appeared to do enough damage to end his career. Brief cause for concern with Maccarinelli down and out on the canvas receiving oxygen, but he was eventually able to leave the ring on his own power. Maccarinelli had 3 consecutive first round kayos coming into this bout. Frenkel touched down in the fifth after a Maccarinelli left hook, ruled a slip by Erkki Meronen. Maccarinelli cut over the right eye after an accidental clash of heads in the sixth. The cut did not figure into the bout's outcome.
