Erick De Leon was born in the town of Sabinas Hidalgo in the Mexican state of Nuevo Leon. He and his family moved to the United States when De Leon was six, first to Texas briefly before finally settling in Lincoln Park, a suburb ten miles outside of Detroit, Michigan. He began boxing at age eight under Roberto Aguilar. He also worked with Emanuel Steward out of the famed Kronk Gym. De Leon, who became a U.S. citizen in 2011, was a three-time National Golden Gloves Champion at 132 pounds. [1]
