Bout Summary

Erislandy Lara was knocked down in the fourth and ninth rounds, but inflicted enough punishment so eventually Alfredo Angulo was unable to continue.

By round 10, Angulo's face had significant swelling and was cut due to Lara´s precise punches. In the round, a disfiguring hematoma developed to Angulo's left eye and following a few sharp left hands, Angulo turned away from his opponent and walked toward his corner. At that, veteran referee Raul Caiz Sr. waved an end to the bout. Angulo later claimed that he turned away from Lara to indicate to his corner that he had been thumbed in the eye and did not intend to quit. Replays showed no intention of thumbing with the thumb-less gloves. The ringside physician thought Angulo may have suffered a broken orbital bone, but later tests showed no fractures.

  • Lara entered as the WBA #5 jr. middleweight contender when the WBA sanctioned the fight. Then, after the fight was made, in the March rankings, Lara was installed as the #1 contender by the WBA. Angulo, who was not in the WBA's top fifteen at 154 lbs. appeared at #3 in the March jr. middleweight rankings.
  • Lara claims to have been incorrectly informed of a rehydration limit of 164 lbs.[2] He weighed 164 on the night of the fight; Angulo weighed 174. Lara also complained that someone prevented his team from splashing him with water between rounds. This is apparent between the 2nd and 3rd round.
