Evgeny Makarenko (born 10 October 1975) is a boxer from Russia best known for winning two world amateur titles in 2001 and 2003 at light heavyweight.
Career
Southpaw Makarenko won a bronze in 1998 as a heavyweight at the 1998 European championships and dominated light heavyweight between 2001 and 2006.
He won gold medals at
- the 2001 World Amateur Boxing Championships,
- the 2002 European Amateur Boxing Championships as a heavyweight
- the 2003 World Amateur Boxing Championships where he beat Rudolf Kraj.
- and the 2004 European Amateur Boxing Championships in Pula, Croatia.
He also participated in the 2004 Summer Olympics as a light heavyweight, his results were:
- 1st round bye
- Defeated Yoan Pablo Hernández (Cuba) 30-18
- Lost to Andre Ward (United States) 16-23
In 2006 he beat highly touted newcomer Artur Beterbiev but lost to him in 2007, preventing him from participating in the World Championships in Chicago.
