Pete Sanstol beat Chico Ferrara by UD in round 10 of 10

  • Date: 1942-07-16
  • Location: Flamingo Park, Miami Beach, Florida, USA
    • Pete Sanstol's final career bout, per modern boxing historians.
    • This was a benefit bout for the United States Army, one of two Sanstol fought, seven years after hanging up his gloves. In the summer of 1942, the Army Air Force staged weekly boxing shows at Flamingo Paul's band-shell in Miami Beach, Florida. Sanstol assisted. The Ferrer fight apparently preceded an eight-round main event. The Ring magazine considered these two benefit fights a short-lived comeback for Sanstol. Tom Ephrem, in his The Ring column entitled "Under Southern Skies," wrote: "Remember Pete Sanstol, a former leading boxer among the bantamweights some years ago? The little fellow returned to the wars and won a four-round decision over Jose Ferrer. Sanstol, 33 years of age, is soldiering and at the Army Replacement Center." (August 1942, p. 51.) Actually, Sanstol was 37. [1]
    • Historian Luckett Davis says this was in fact a ten-rounder that occurred July 16, 1942, and that Sanstol also won a four-rounder against José Ferrer sometime earlier that May.
