- Moorer had lost the IBF and WBA titles on November 5, 1994, when George Foreman knocked him out.
- The IBF title was vacant after Foreman stepped down, refusing to fight Schulz for a second time. He had won a controversial 12-round decision over the German on April 22, 1995.
- Schulz then lost a bout for the vacant crown on December 9, 1995 to South Africa's Francois Botha, who was later disqualified after testing positive for a steroid.
