"TOKYO (UPI) -
Argentina's Horacio Accavallo came from behind tonight and won the world flyweight championship with a 15-round split decision over Japan's Katsuyoshi Takayama.
Referee Nicholas Pope scored it 73-69 and Judge Eloy Gonzalcs 74-66 for Accavallo, but Japanese Ko Toyama gave it to Takayama 70-71.
The United Press International card had it 70-66 for Accavallo.
Accavallo will be recognized as the world flyweight champion by the World Boxing Association and the World Boxing Council, but he must defend against Hiroyuki Ebihara, the WBA’s top contender, within 120 days.
Accavallo, a veteran of 88 fights, was a 6-4 favorite to defeat the 22-year-old Japanese, but Takayama surprised the crowd of 10,000 by taking the offensive at the opening bell and maintaining a lead through the first 12 rounds."
