The favored Madera sent Quiroz to the canvas in the third round and dominated the bout up to the seventh on the basis of greater speed, good footwork, and a very strong left hand.

But the 24-year-old Quiroz revived in the eighth and hit the Mexican repeatedly, using his right hand to take away the speed of Madera, 31.

Quiroz finally knocked out the defending champion with a strong right punch to the chin.
