- Rubio cutting off the ring during this bout and landing many left hooks on the 12-0 Cota, also from Mexico. Fought in front of a local crowd in Rubio's home town of Torreon, Mexico.
- Several left hooks in a flurry sent Cota face first to the canvas for good in the seventh round.
- Cota did beat the count at 8 but was out on his feet, with the referee removing Cota's gumshield and waving off the count. Time: 1:33 of round 7. Rubio appeared NOT in a neutral corner.
- Rubio, 54-6-1 57 kayos, made a bid for a rematch with Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. with this win. Rubio suing the WBC at this time for failing to force contractual mandatory drug testing on Chavez Jr.
