Danny Garcia versus Lucas Matthysse WBA WBC World Light Welterweight Title Bout

  • Matthysse, the favored hard puncher, appeared to outbox the 27-0 Garcia for the first few rounds. Garcia took his shots well and started taking control from the middle rounds after a good 4th Round.
  • Garcia's powerful left hooks closed Matthysse's right eye in the seventh round, leaving Matthysse unable to see most hooks coming.
  • Garcia left-right midsection combination followed by a left to the head sent Matthysse to the canvas in round 11 for first time in his career.
  • Garcia penalized a point in round in round 12 for low blows by referee Tony Weeks. 114-112 scorecard by two judges seen as correct.
  • Matthysse was outboxed by Zab Judah over 12 rounds in a 2010 IBF-WBO eliminator, providing Garcia a later round framework to find the win.
