- Kauffman 27-1 coming in, Thompson 13-1. By experience on paper this was a mismatch.
- Kauffman wins the vacant World Boxing Association Fedalatin Heavyweight regional title. WBA Supervisor: Mr. Sucre.
- In a strange ten round hugging contest, Travis Kauffman appeared to win every round except perhaps the first. Kauffman's frustration was laced with extreme caution, as Thompson, a Chris Arreola visual lookalike of similar proportion to Kauffman but not yet as experienced, engaged in a John Ruiz type strategy of take a punch or throw a punch and then intentionally hold on for 20 seconds or more. Locked into a survivor mode along the ropes for the entire contest, Thompson went the distance. Though Thompson physically resembled a young and dangerous Chris Arreola throughout, he could not fight like Arreola.
- Referee Blair Talmadge stated after the bout he could have taken many points away from Thompson or disqualified him, but as Kauffman had remained focused and was winning every round, on prerogative he let the bout run its course and go the 10 round distance.
- In the prefight press conference, Thompson claimed he was the next heavyweight champion, and was so good he got thrown out of the Wladimir Klitschko camp as a sparring partner. Kauffman's trainer, Nazim Richardson, responded "Thompson is from planet Pluto or Saturn if he expects us to believe that. Maybe he's telling the truth. If he was in the Klitschkos training camp, he got thrown out because he's a terrible fighter!"
