  • Chagaev entered the title bout as the WBA #3 heavyweight contender, while Oquendo entered as the WBA #4 heavyweight contender.
  • Southpaw Chagaev fought the bout coming forward landing some good head and body shots, while Oquendo fought side to side as counterpuncher. Oquendo got stronger as the fight went on, Chagaev looked tired entering the championship rounds. Oquendo started slow but finsihed strong looking like the stronger fighter. Chagaev looked tired and thrilled when the final bell ended. It was a very tactical fight and the experience of both fighters as well as respect for each other was evident. The 12th round the crowd was on its feet and it was an exciting finish as Oquendo looked for the KO and Chagaev looked for the fight to end fighting smart.
  • Cut over the left eye gave Chagaev some trouble from the fourth round, enabling Oquendo to keep the bout close. The corner dealt with the cut and stopped the bleeding.
  • First world championship bout and card of note in Chechnya. Chechen President Ramzan Kadyrov was in attendance at ringside.
  • Boxing celebrities included Evander Holyfield, David Haye, Marco Huck, and Artur Grigorian. Ring commentary was provided by Michael Buffer.
  • If Oquendo had won one more round, it would have been a majority draw. There were only a few holds. The bout was fought cleanly.
  • According to Oquendo's Chicago promoter Bobby Hitz, Oquendo's contract called for mandatory WBA world title rematch in 120 days and is scheduled for November 2014.
  • The ring appeared one of the largest rings seen in a televised world championship bout or anywhere.
  • Oquendo had originally withdrawn from the fight due to his wife and newborn child sick in the ER & ICU. In order to save the event, Oquendo flew out from Chicago on Friday July 4th and arrived in Grozny in time for the weigh-in on Sat July 5th. The fight was held on July 6th about 24 hours after Oquendo arrived in Grozny. Oquendo had not trained for 2 weeks prior to this fight and had not slept since leaving Chicago on July 4th. Nate Jones, Dino Spencer and Tom Tsatas trained Oquendo and George Hernandez was the cut man in Oquendo's corner.
  • Oquendo failed the post fight drug test. He was tested positive for two banned substances (tamoxifin and anastrozole) [2]
