Timeline

Joe Louis (right) vs. Tommy Farr
  • On March 31, ahead of Max Baer vs. Tommy Farr, British boxing promoter Syd Hulls said that Louis would "definitely" fight either Farr, Baer or Max Schmeling on July 30 at White City Stadium in London, if Louis-Braddock fight went through.[1]
  • On April 21, Hulls claimed that Louis had signed a contract that would guarantee him facing the winner of the bout between Farr and opponent yet to be determined (possibly Walter Neusel) and again reiterated that the fight would happen on July 30 at White City Stadium in London, though none of this was confirmed by Louis' promoter Mike Jacobs.[2]
  • Another source claimed in late April that Farr had received offers to fight either Louis or Max Schmeling in his next bout.[3]
  • Then there were speculations that Maurice Strickland had received an offer to fight Farr on June 16 in London, with the winner being lined up to face Louis next.[4]
  • On May 19 it was again reported that the winner of Farr-Baer was in line to face Louis.[5]
  • On May 29 The Daily Mirror reported that Farr's manager Ted Broadribb would attend Louis-Braddock fight and issue the challenge to the winner[6], while Brisbane Telegraph wrote that Louis planned his first title defense for July 30 at White City Stadium in London against either Farr or Walter Neusel.[7]
  • On June 18, Hulls publicly announced that he had arranged for Farr to face the winner of Louis-Braddock and once again stated that the fight would take place at White City Stadium in London on July 30.[8]
  • Immediately after Louis knocked out Braddock and became world heavyweight champion on June 22, his manager Mike Jacobs announced that he had tentatively scheduled Louis to defend his title against Farr in July in London.[9]
  • Ultimately, contracts for the Louis vs. Farr fight were signed on July 5.[10][11]
  • On July 31, British Boxing Board of Control decided not to recognize the fight as a title fight and insisted the winner must face Max Schmeling for the heavyweight crown.[12][13]
