- Isaac Chilemba became only the second fighter to go the distance with Kovalev in a world title bout, after B-Hop Bernard Hopkins.
- Chilemba was down in the seventh round.
- Chilemba, a Malawi born South African veteran of 30 professional bouts, won up to three rounds on the scorecards against Kovalev.
- Chilemba, fighting in Kovalev's hometown, took every shot Kovalev threw, landing some counters. Chilemba had a bloody nose at bout's end.
- Kovalev stated after the bout "There was no aim to knock him out, but the main aim was to gain experience from this fight for the next fight in November in Las Vegas (with Andre Ward).” Ward responded he saw more than enough Kovalev style flaws in this bout to beat Kovalev.
