Bout Summary

In a 12 round WBA interim world title bout which was ordinary for six rounds, an accidental clash of heads in round seven caused a horrible cut on the forehead of Badou Jack between the eyes turned the bout into a bloodbath, forcing Jack to fight the last five rounds on the inside with limited vision. Browne lost a point for excessive holding in round seven. Former World Boxing Association World Light Heavyweight champion Lou Del Valle was the trainer in the corner of Badou Jack. The shirt of referee Tony Weeks was blood red soaked from the bloodied Badou Jack's blood. The cut ultimately did not decide the outcome of the bout. Browne simply outworked Jack, whose offense was limited for most of the bout. Refereeing and scoring appeared neutral and fair. Both fighters embraced in friendship after the bout, and Browne thanked Jack for the opportunity to fight him. Browne complained Jack was leaning in with his head all night. The WBC Silver Light heavyweight title was also on the line. In addition, the bout was a WBC Light Heavyweight elimination bout for a shot at WBC World Light Heavyweight champion Oleksandr Gvozdyk.

Notes

  • Browne entered the fight as the WBC #2, WBA #2 and WBO #2 light heavyweight contender.
  • Jack entered the fight as the WBC #1 and WBA #1 light heavyweight contender.
  • Showtime's unofficial scorer Steve Farhood had Browne winning 118-109. [1]
  • According to Compubox, Browne landed 145 of 515 punches (28 percent), and Jack connected on 66 of 303 (22 percent). [2]
  • Jack earned $500,000 for the fight, Browne earned $250,000.
