Notes
- United Press International reported:
- Camacho, who entered the ring with a sequined flag of Puerto Rico on his robe and matching trunks, took the fight to Davis from the start. Camacho fired right jabs to the head from his southpaw stance, but was most damaging with two-handed combinations to the body. Davis seemed to be feeling Camacho out during the opening two rounds, backing off his charging opponent. Once he built a lead, Camacho retreated and let Davis chase. Davis rarely caught Camacho with anything big. Davis' best rounds were the fourth and fifth when Camacho slowed his attack. Davis fired combinations to the head but rarely landed. Camacho gained confidence as the fight wore on and dominated the seventh, eighth and ninth rounds. Davis was content to cover his head and let Camacho fire to the body without answering. Camacho occasionally landed eight to 10 straight punches to his timid foe's body.
- Following his win over Davis, Camacho said he next wanted to fight Ray Mancini, the retired former WBA lightweight champion. "He's got two weeks to decide," he said of Mancini. If a fight against Mancini couldn't be made, Camacho said he would fight IBF junior welterweight champion Terry Marsh and then make his first title defense against Edwin Rosario, whom he defeated by a controversial 12-round split decision on June 13, 1986.
- "I don't like to make excuses, but three days before this bout I was in the hospital with a 103-degree temperature," Davis said after the fight. "It's not to take anything away from Camacho. He fought well. But I was not at the top of my game."
- The fight was televised live by ABC on Wide World of Sports.
- There was a sellout crowd of 3,600.
- Camacho's purse was $250,000, and Davis made $65,000.
