NORTH ADAMS, Aug. 16 (UP) -- Glenn Newton Smith, 23-year-old Philadelphia middleweight, died at a hospital early today without regaining consciousness after being knocked out in the ninth round of his bout with Sam Baroudi of Akron, OH., here last night. Medical Examiner Arthur Burckel, who also is physician of Meadowbrook Bowl Club which sponsored the bout, reported that Smith apparently died of a cerebral hemorrhage resulting from a blow at the base of the skull. Indications were that the injury was suffered as the boxer struck his head on the floor of the ring. Dr. Burckel said an autopsy would be performed later today. No immediate action was taken against Baroudi. Smith had taken a severe beating through the bout. In the ninth round a hard blow to the jaw floored him and he hit the ring with a resounding thump. Counted out, he was assisted dazedly to his dressing room. Quenzell McCall of Philadelphia, a friend, rode with him in an ambulance to the hospital. The boxer, whose ring name was Newt Smith, was one of five fighters managed by Dave Levy of Atlantic City, N.J. (Boston Globe)
