Mays was content to outbox Galento in the first six rounds, blocking most of Galento's punches. Galento began to land low blows in the 7th round, which led Mays to open up more and exchange blows with Galento, of which Galento had the better of in the 7th and 8th rounds. Mays would hurt Galento near the end of the 9th round, and after Galento landed more low blows in the 10th round, Mays was able to outwork Galento in the 10th round.
