Sid Mitchell beat Charley Red Egan by KO in round 4 of 4

  • Date: 1916-03-24
  • Location: Elks Club, Seattle, Washington, USA
  • Referee: Frank Farmer

Per Elks' custom, the house lights were turned off at 11:00 p.m. for one minute. When they came back on, Egan was found helpless in his corner, knocked out.

Fred Bogan soon claimed that pursuant to Marquess of Queensberry Rules, Rule 7, the referee should have resumed the bout at a time and place he determined, because of the "interference" of the turned-off lights, rather than accepting Egan being "knocked out" during the darkness. April 1, 1916 Seattle Star [1]

This incident was recounted in the June 21, 1966 Spokane Spokesman-Review [2].
